The workplace of the future will not automatically be entirely home-based. Homeworking has nevertheless become a lasting option: Destatis (data for 2023) reports that 23.5% of employed people in Germany worked from home.

The Workplace Of The Future? At Home!

Why home office is also a possibility after the crisis. Almost halve of all employees are currently working from home. Only a few prefer to return to the bureau. Home office is secure, flexible and location-independent – even after the pandemic.
Working from home offers flexibility – and can save time
Working from home can make daily routines more flexible and reduce travel. Whether a role can be performed from home depends on the activity, the available technology and company rules.
Benefits can go beyond temporary safety measures: childcare or medical appointments may be easier to plan around working time. Depending on the number of remote days, some commutes are avoided, but hybrid work does not eliminate them entirely.
Homeworking: temporary measure or lasting development?
The extent of homeworking varies by role and organisation. An ifo Institute company survey (2024) found that employees in Germany spent an average of 17% of their working time at home. This is a market average, not a recommended schedule for every job.
The evidence therefore points to different hybrid models rather than a complete shift of every workplace to the home.
A model for the future
While some industries do not allow for home office work, others seem to have entirely missed this movement despite their suitability. A good example: Contact- and Call-Centre. At its core, telework has the potential to guarantee businesses great freedom concerning their choice of working hours and location. The only things call agents need to do their job are internet access and a telephone connection. Yet still, many companies insist on fixed working hours and the physical presence of their employees.
Hybrid work depends on reliable access to business systems. Eurostat (2025, data for 2024) reports that 60.2% of EU enterprises with at least ten employees provided remote access to email, documents and business applications.
yoummday decided on a different approach. Instead of relying on prescribed working schedules, the start-up relies on flexibility, trust and an innovative infrastructure. Here, workers are self-dependent and flexible, while just as effective from home – and they decide the time and workload themselves – location independently.
